West Bengal Plans Rs 1,200 Crore Sundarbans Investment by 2029
Chief Minister announces major funding for Sundarbans development and a new Muriganga bridge at Kakdwip event.
West Bengal Chief Minister unveiled an ambitious Rs 1,200 crore development package for the Sundarbans region, pledging completion by 2029, during a public address at Kakdwip. The announcement signals one of the largest state-level infrastructure and conservation commitments the ecologically sensitive delta region has seen in recent years.
Central to the plan is the construction of a bridge over the Muriganga river, a long-sought connectivity project that would link communities in the Sundarbans delta more reliably to the mainland. Improved river-crossing infrastructure in the region could meaningfully reduce travel times for residents who currently depend on ferry services, boosting access to healthcare, markets, and emergency services.

The Sundarbans, home to the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presents unique engineering and environmental challenges for any large-scale development push. State planners will need to balance infrastructure ambitions against strict ecological protections governing the delta, where rising sea levels and cyclone vulnerability already stress local communities.
The Kakdwip announcement appears timed to reinforce the state government's commitment to coastal and rural constituencies ahead of future electoral cycles, as the Sundarbans has historically been both a politically significant and underserved region. Analysts watching Bengal's infrastructure pipeline will note whether funding timelines and project clearances keep pace with the headline figure.
